PREP 2016 Seeking Instructors, Mentors

For 37 years, UTSA’s Prefreshman Engineering Program has provided an academically intense, mathematics-related summer program which stresses the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. The summer enrichment program is calling for instructors and program assistant mentors for the June 13 – July 28 session.

The application deadline is close of business on March 31.PREP Instructors and Program Assistant Mentors are temporary, paid employees of UTSA, beginning with orientation on Jun. 6 through the end of the term.

The rigorous PREP curriculum stresses science, math, computer science and engineering and welcomes teachers and college students in related fields. The core curriculum includes Logic and its Applications to Mathematics, Introduction to Engineering for first-year students; Algebraic Structures and Introduction to Physics for second-year students; Technical Writing and Introduction to Probability and Statistics for third-year students; and Introduction to Computer Science and a choice of Water Science, Nanotechnology, or Cyber Security for fourth-year students. All PREP participants attend problem solving classes and career awareness seminars.

Instructors’ duties are similar to everyday school operations and require teaching three to four one-hour classes daily, formulating lesson plans, preparing exams and determining grades. Applicants must be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the seven-week session. Additionally, there will be a required field trip scheduled on at least one Friday during the session.

College students majoring in science, mathematics, computer science, engineering or related fields, who maintain a 2.5 GPA or better, may apply for Program Assistant Mentor positions. Preferably, college students will have completed calculus I and will have experience working with adolescents; those with an interest in pursuing an education career are highly encouraged to apply. They will attend classes and labs with the students, oversee student safety and behavior, supervise research and study periods, provide tutoring as necessary and in the role of a mentor, encourage the educational development of program participants.
