The UTSA Institute for P-20 Initiatives and the Texas Mentoring Partnership hosted the 5th Annual Texas Mentoring Summit (TMS) January 19-January 20, 2017, at the Wyndham Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. Approximately 100 guests from across Texas attended the summit with sessions focused on mentoring students in kindergarten through college. The summit theme “Mentoring: A Pathway To and Through College & Career” focused on the positive impact mentoring can have on student success from kindergarten through college and beyond.

Tracy Taylor, who mentors in Cypress Fairbanks ISD, was recognized as the Outstanding Adult Mentor, and Eagle Burgmann of Houston, Texas was recognized as the Outstanding Corporate/Business Mentor at the summit awards luncheon. Mayor Ivy Taylor was on hand to welcome guests to San Antonio and Randy Beamer of News 4 WOAI was the Master of Ceremonies of the awards luncheon. Ilsa Garcia of Communities in Schools San Antonio, Christina Martinez of Big Brothers Big Sisters San Antonio and Andrea Longoria-Contreras of Guardian House were key planning committee members.

“Mentoring Month serves as an important reminder of the need for great mentors in Texas as well as the need for quality mentoring for our youth and support for mentoring in our state. The emerging Texas Mentoring Partnership seeks to elevate support for all of these areas as well as provide a link between Texas mentoring organizations and MENTOR, national. Since mentoring has been shown to be effective in student success, we want to help multiply this success in our city and Texas” stated Belinda Harmon, Director of Community Outreach at the UTSA Institute for P-20 Initiatives.

Governor Abbot released a proclamation before the event declaring it Mentoring Month in Texas.  January is National Mentoring Month and the Texas Mentoring Partnership is an affiliate of MENTOR, home of the National Mentoring Resource Center.
