Sixth Annual UTSA TRiO Research Symposium
Date Posted:July 14, 2016
(July 14, 2016) --On July 22 and 23 the sixth annual UTSA TRiO Research Symposium will be hosted at the Main Campus for approximately 150 students from the UTSA TRiO programs Educational Talent Search, Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program and Upward Bound marking the end of the summer program.
This will be the first time many of the students will present research in a formal, symposium setting. The symposium is designed to help prepare students for their next level of higher education by exposing them to the research process as well as allowing them to engage in scholarly discourse, to network with others and to enhance their public speaking skills. The high school students will submit group research projects and the undergraduate students will submit individual posters. Each of the posters will be reviewed and scored by three judges who will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the high school and collegiate divisions. High school division students in the group winning first place will each receive a $500.00 scholarship to UTSA, should they enroll.
The symposium schedule for Friday morning consists of the poster presentation showcase. That afternoon, the McNair Scholars – who comprise the collegiate participants - will present their research to participants and guests via PowerPoint. On Saturday, parent guests will observe the poster showcase and enjoy a luncheon which will include a keynote address, student presentations and award ceremony.
TRiO comprises outreach and services programs that are designed by the United States Department of Education to identify and provide education resources for students from underserved populations in secondary schools and higher education institutions nationwide. The UTSA TRiO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound programs currently serve middle and high school students from San Antonio and South Texas. The TRiO McNair Scholars program is specifically for UTSA undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing degrees at the graduate level.
