Prefreshman Engineering Program Now Accepting Applications for Summer 2018 Enrollment: Deadline February 14
Rigorous summer program lets youth explore engineering careers
(San Antonio) … The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) announced today the Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) is accepting applications for summer 2018 enrollment. The program serves high-achieving students in grades six through eleven with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Last summer, 1,123 students completed the program at 10 San Antonio locations. PREP had an additional 2,671 students in other Texas cities.
PREP was founded in 1979 at UTSA by mathematics professor Manuel Berriozabal to provide high-achieving students (particularly minorities and women) excelling in STEM with instruction to prepare them for careers in those areas.
The STEM-based program, seven weeks in length, is presented over four summers with an academically intense curriculum that stresses hands-on application of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. Also, PREP has recently been renewed and approved as an Innovative Course - Career and Technical Education (CTE) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). An emphasis will be on incorporating Systems Thinking into the curriculum.
Online application to enroll in the summer 2018 PREP program must be completed by Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, to be eligible for consideration. The program cost is $500 per student. Many San Antonio schools and school districts provide funding for a select number of students to participate in the summer program. Students should see their school counselors to determine if they qualify for financial support.
